Peter and the Starcatcher soars into Spartanburg
The grown-up’s prequel to Peter Pan runs March 8-17, 2019 at the Chapman Cultural Center
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Prepare to be whisked away on the adventure of a lifetime as the Spartanburg Little Theatre brings Neverland to the Upstate with the Tony Award-winning play with music Peter and the Starcatcher, set to run March 8 through the 17th at the Chapman Cultural Center. Based on the novel Peter and the Starcatchers, by humorist Dave Barry and suspense writer Ridley Pearson, this grown-up prequel to Peter Pan, features a dozen actors playing pirates, mermaids, and our favorite Lost Boys, who set out for an adventure filled with ingenious stagecraft and the limitless possibilities of theatrical storytelling.
“Peter and the Starcatcher ends at the exact moment that the well-known J.M. Barrie Peter Pan stories begin,” says Jay Coffman, Executive Artistic Director of the Spartanburg Little Theatre. “The beauty of this story is that you get to see where all of these beloved characters like Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and Tinkerbell came from. It’s the perfect addition to the popular Peter Pan mythos and completely in the spirit of the original stories.”
Before Wendy, before he was Captain Hook, before a boy was named Peter Pan, and even before there was a Neverland, there was a Starcatcher apprentice named Molly, a pirate named Black Stache and his crew, and an orphan without a name, all about to be whisked off on the good ship Neverland on a hilarious and perilous high seas adventure. Along the way, Molly learns what it means to grow up, while the nameless orphan and his friends take up residence on an island where dreams are born and time is never planned, and where one of them is named Peter Pan, the boy who would never grow up. This swashbuckling production will have you hooked from the moment you let your imagination take flight!
Peter and the Starcatcher contains some bawdy humor and is recommended for audiences age 10 and up.
“This is one of those unique productions that works for younger audiences and adults alike,” says Jay Coffman, Executive Artistic Director at Spartanburg Little Theatre. “However, it is not a Disney production and definitely not meant for very young children.”
Peter and the Starcatcher performances are March 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8pm and March 10 and 17 at 3pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Chapman Cultural Center box office at (864) 542-2787 or by ordering online at www.chapmanculturalcenter.org.
