Auditions for Grace for President are August 13 and 14, 2018
Join Spartanburg Youth Theatre in their first show of the season!
The Spartanburg Youth Theatre announces open auditions for the first production in their 2018/2019 season, Grace for President. Auditions will take place at 5:30 pm Monday, August 13 and 5:30 pm Tuesday, August 14 at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg.
SHOW INFO: One day in 3rd grade history class, Grace Campbell realizes there has never been a female president, so she decides to run for class president and inspires a school election! Through the throes of campaigning and pep rallies, Grace and her classmates discover what it takes to be the best candidate and find the fun and hilarity in the wonderful world of politics. This highly educational and contagiously energetic musical will have you dancing in the aisle. History class has never been this much fun!
AUDITION DATES & TIME: Monday, August 13 or Tuesday, August 14, 2018, 5:30pm-7:30pm both nights. Auditionees need only attend one night. Auditionees will be seen in the order their audition form is received.
For this production, we are looking for 3rd to 12th graders for all roles.
Anticipated cast size = 7-10
CASTING NOTE:
We are seeking a diverse cast of girls and boys that reflects all ethnicities and backgrounds for this production. Roles with specific ethnicity requirements are noted below in the character descriptions.
AVAILABLE ROLES:
Grace Campbell Age: 8-18 l Alto l A young African-American student.
Grace is kind, good-hearted, and hard-working. Focused and determined, Grace is the heroine we cheer for and look up to. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have a strong sense of rhythm.
Mrs. Barrington Age: 12-18 l Alto/Mezzo l Grace’s teacher.
Smart, encouraging, and friendly. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
Thomas Cobb Age: 8-18 l Tenor l Grace’s opponent in the election.
Thomas is an arrogant overachiever who will do anything to win the election. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
Rose Age: 8-18 l Soprano
A 3rd grade student at Woodrow Wilson Elementary school and Grace’s best friend. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
Sam Age: 8-18 l Tenor l A shy, nerdy, unpopular student at Grace’s school.
Sam is hesitant and a little nervous. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
Robbie Age: 8-18 l Baritone
A 3rd grade student at Woodrow Wilson Elementary school and Grace’s classmate and friend. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
Anthony Age: 8-18 l Baritone
A 3rd grade student at Woodrow Wilson Elementary school and Grace’s classmate and friend. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
SUPPORTING ROLES:
This script calls for one actor to play the roles of Mrs. Barrington and Clara, one actor to play the roles of Rose and Mrs. Philips, and one actor to play the roles of Anthony and Mr. Waller. Depending on the skillset shown at auditions and callbacks, the director may choose to cast one actor in each of the three roles, or may cast all six roles separately, or some variation thereof.
Mr. Waller Age: 12-18 l Baritone
Another 3rd grade teacher at Grace’s school who teaches Thomas Cobb. Mr. Waller is a very big fan of Thomas. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
Mrs. Philips Age: 12-18 l Soprano l A librarian at Grace’s school.
Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
Clara Age: 14-18 l Alto/Mezzo
A 3rd grade student at Woodrow Wilson Elementary school and Grace’s classmate and friend. Actor should be a confident singer and dancer, and must have strong sense of rhythm.
CALLBACKS:
If callbacks are necessary, a callback list will be posted on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 after 3:00pm via the SYT Facebook page and the SYT website.
Callbacks will be Thursday, August 16, 2018 from 5:30-8:30pm. Callbacks will include cold readings from the script, learning songs from the show and a short dance combination. Those called back should wear clothes comfortable for movement.

In the center building, downstairs in the Youth Theatre classroom (look for signs!)
PREPARATION:
All auditionees are required to prepare 16 bars of a musical theatre song for the audition. Please bring sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. If you do not have a song, one will be provided for you at the audition. Memorization is encouraged.
ANTICIPATED REHEARSAL SCHEDULE:
· Rehearsals will occur Aug 20-Oct 2, 2018-- but not necessarily every day. Rehearsals will mainly occur Monday-Friday (5:30-7:30pm). There may be occasional rehearsals on Saturdays (10am-12pm) and/or Sundays (2-4pm) if needed.
· REQUIRED DATES ASIDE FROM REHEARSALS
o Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 10am-4pm – Set Build
o Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 10am-4pm – Load-in
o If actors are unavailable for Set Build or Load-in, they MUST make up the hours missed from these days, or they cannot participate in the production.
