Classical Guitarist Paul Bowman Plays Free During Arts Programming
SPARTANBURG, SC – Sundays Unplugged is a weekly program of Chapman Cultural Center providing cultural entertainment and opportunities, most of which are free. Singer-songwriter concerts occur every Sunday, 2-4 p.m., and art galleries and the history museum are open with free admission, 1-5 p.m. Other casual programs often add to the experience, and this Sunday, June 14, patrons are invited to create art during SAM Family Programming, 1-4 p.m.
Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) will focus its monthly SAM Family Programming on “stained glass” sun catchers. Inspired by the museum’s current exhibition Furnace and Flame, families will work together to create unique sun catchers using tissue paper and mixed media, mimicking the colors and forms found in the gallery. Materials and instruction are included. Participants are encouraged to visit the exhibition first and complete the Gallery Guide prior to the workshop, held in the Art School’s 2D Studio, 1-4 p.m. Participation is $2 per non-member and free for SAM Household Members.
For the weekly singer-songwriter concert, fingerstyle classical guitarist Paul Bowman performs on his nylon-string guitar. A regular performer at local venues like II Samuel’s and The Piedmont Club, Bowman is an accomplished, classically trained musician. He has more than 25 years of experience performing at weddings, corporate functions, art receptions, and formal music recitals. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in New York, and a doctorate of Musical Arts from U.C. San Diego. Though a resident of rural Lake Lure, NC, Bowman won first prize at the VI International Classical Guitar Competition in San Juan, PR, and was a finalist at the Guitar Foundation of America’s Classical Guitar Competition. His repertoire spans hundreds of tunes in classical, gospel, Spanish, rock, Broadway, and many other genres. Bowman will perform in Zimmerli Plaza, weather permitting, 2-4 p.m.
Patrons are also invited to discover the current exhibitions in Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg, Spartanburg Art Museum, Spartanburg Regional History Museum, and the Student Galleries, all with free admission. Spartanburg Science Center will be open for a small fee.
