What's it like to Volunteer at the Chapman Cultural Center?
Written by Lauren Prestino Friedrich, House Manager & Volunteer Coordinator, Chapman Cultural Center
Have you seen a show at the Chapman Cultural Center and wondered about those friendly faces you see in the theater, assisting you with all your needs? Let’s chat about it and before we’re done, you may want to be one of those folks!
Located in the heart of downtown Spartanburg, Chapman Cultural Center is a place to discover, experience, and celebrate the performing and visual arts, science, and history. Volunteers at Chapman Cultural Center assist in the smooth and safe operation of our facility and help ensure it's a welcoming environment for everyone. Being a volunteer is all about great customer service. We believe that our volunteers are the heart of the cultural experience. Our team is full of community members who are dependable, friendly, and eager to share their time with others.
Many of our volunteers have been donating their time for over seven years, and some as long as the Chapman Cultural Center has been open! We also have a great bunch of new volunteers, eager to give back to their community, be a part of the theatre action on the weekends, stay active, meet new people, or see amazing shows.

On a show night, you may find volunteers checking tickets at the lobby doors, welcoming patrons and giving out programs, helping patrons find their seats, tending the bar, and running concessions. Each of these volunteers chose the type of show they wanted to volunteer for, as well as the position they wanted to work that afternoon or evening. Many bring friends or family and make it a night out together!
A common sentiment among our volunteer team is that interacting with the patrons at Chapman Cultural Center is one of the reasons they love returning time and time again. Helping guests feel welcomed and providing them with a great customer service experience on top of a great show is a wonderful feeling.

Of course, we can’t forget the cherry on top, getting to see all the amazing performances! Whether you’re a fan of plays, musicals, ballet, bluegrass, classical music, or seeing youth shows (which are a favorite of many of our volunteers!), or just enjoy live performances in general, volunteering at Chapman Cultural Center is a great way to give back to your community while getting to see fantastic shows FOR FREE!
If you are looking to give back to your community, be involved in the arts, meet new people, or just have a way to see performances for free, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Lauren Friedrich at Lfriedrich@chapmanculturalcenter.org or visit chapmanculturalcenter.org/volunteering-opportunities/ for more information.
